Venue History
Built in 1900 by St. John’s United Methodist Church, 2640 Space is steeped in history and social commitment. After a fire in 1981, the church was restored and became a hub for local activism, supporting LGBTQ rights, racial justice, and housing the homeless. In the 1980s, the church provided sanctuary to Salvadoran refugees and became the first Methodist church led by an openly transgender minister in the early 2000s. Since 2007, 2640 Space has served as a collaborative venue for social justice events, hosted by both the St. John’s congregation and the Red Emma’s collective.
