About
The Union Mills Homestead, a cherished landmark and historic estate located just seven miles north of Westminster, MD, and 17 miles from Gettysburg, PA, has been home to the Shriver family for six generations. This museum of American rural heritage features original artifacts and immersive tours of the main house, blacksmith shop, and working grist mill, preserving the Shriver family’s legacy. Known for its Civil War history and cultural significance, Union Mills Homestead is a popular destination for history enthusiasts and school groups alike. The estate’s beautiful gardens and rustic meeting barn provide a picturesque venue for weddings and special events.
Established in 1797 by two brothers who built a grist mill and saw mill, the site later expanded to include a tannery, blacksmith shop, cooper’s shop, and wheelwright. Today, the Union Mills Homestead Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit organization, oversees the estate’s preservation, with all proceeds supporting its ongoing care and interpretation.
Union Mills is an exceptional choice for weddings, offering scenic gardens and a rustic Tannery space that can accommodate up to 150 guests. Additional tent space is available to accommodate larger events. With a designated caterer, Tom Schuman of Kountry Kafe & Catering, every detail, from decor to rentals, is managed to make planning seamless. Venue rental fees support the preservation of this historic treasure.
